The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
